The Rockies Through the Lens of Time
Until January 15, 2006
From 9:00 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily
Exhibition Room B
Free admission

Presented by Library and Archives Canada in celebration of Alberta's centennial, this exhibition is built around dramatic images-mountains, passes and valleys-of Jasper and Waterton Lakes National Parks. Photographs taken in 1915 are compared with ones taken recently at the same sites. The photos reveal almost a century of change in the landscape of, interests in, and ideas about our national parks. The Rockies Through the Lens of Time includes a variety of complementary material and artifacts.

Alberta Faces by Orest Semchishen
Until January 15, 2006
From 9:00 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily
West Corridor
Free admission

In celebration of Alberta's centennial, Library and Archives Canada is pleased to present this selection of photographs from the recently acquired Orest Semchishen fonds.

In the early 1970s, Edmonton radiologist Orest Semchishen began focusing his camera on the people and places of Alberta.

He photographed people from many walks of life and from all corners of the province. He photographed the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the employer and the employee, in their homes, workplaces, businesses and public spaces-people going about their daily lives and affecting the lives of others

Written by War
Canadian Family Stories, 1939-1945

Until March 4, 2006
From 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily
Exhibition Room C
Free admission

Library and Archives Canada marks the Year of the Veteran by examining the Second World War from the perspective of the family, and seeing its most profound impact on Canada. Most families contributed to the war: nearly one in ten Canadians served in uniform between 1939 and 1945; millions more served in factories, on farms and in the merchant marine. It is their stories that are told through the archival documents on display in this exhibition.

Hans Christian Andersen is best known for his fairy tales, although he also wrote novels, travel books, numerous theatre plays and almost 800 poems. The Judean Josephus in the Christian West
Sunday, November 27
2:00 p.m. (Auditorium)
Free admission

Flavius Josephus (37 - ca. 100 CE) is one of the most influential Jewish writers of all time, but his constituency was almost exclusively Christian. That such a prolific and self-aware Jewish writer should have found his audience chiefly among Christians raises many intriguing questions: Why were his writings so attractive to Christians, but not to Jews? Did Christians understand his purposes and themes? How did their use of Josephus fit their own projects?

In this illustrated lecture, Professor Mason will discuss a single episode from Josephus' Judean War, the dramatic story of a desperate mother's resort to eating her own child during the siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE. He will examine first the historicity and literary antecedents of the story. He will then trace the remarkably extensive afterlife of this account in the writings of the church fathers of the 2nd to 5th centuries, the medieval passion-play tradition, the renaissance and reformation, and the early modern period. This survey will highlight a great paradox: Josephus' works were preserved and avidly read, but by those who had little concern with their overall themes or intended lessons.

Steve Mason holds the Canada Research Chair in Greco-Roman Cultural Interaction, York University, and teaches in Programmes in Classics and Religious Studies, the Graduate Programme in History and in the Centre for Jewish Studies.

A display of Josephus' works, drawn from the Jacob M. Lowy Collection of rare Hebraica and Judaica will accompany the lecture. A reception will follow the lecture. Sponsored by the Council of the Jacob M. Lowy Collection. In English.
