The PIKA database provides a unique window on Canadian children's literature. Contained in the database are records for all children's books held in the National Library's Canadian Children's Literature Service Collection -- over 35 000 titles. The collection contains Canadian children's books in English, French and other languages, dating from the 19th century to the present day.

Records for recent titles have been enriched by the addition of summaries and age levels, which have been generously provided by The Canadian Children's Book Centre and Communication-Jeunesse. And for the first time, we have also begun adding subject headings to fiction titles, beginning with the most recent, in order to provide improved access to Canadian children's fiction.

The database will be updated on an ongoing basis as new children's literature titles are added to the collection.

The National Library gratefully acknowledges the contributions of The Canadian Children's Book Centre and Communication-Jeunesse to the enrichment of the PIKA database.

The Canadian Children's Book Centre (CCBC), founded in 1976, is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting Canadian children's books published in English. Summaries and age and grade levels included in PIKA, were originally published in Our Choice, the CCBC's annual guide to the best new Canadian children's books, magazines and multimedia. The CCBC offers a wide range of publications, services and programs, including TD Canadian Children's Book Week.

Communication-Jeunesse, founded in 1971, is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting French-language children's books published in Quebec and Canada. Summaries and age levels included in PIKA were originally published in Communication-Jeunesse's annual guide to the best new French-Canadian children's books. Communication-Jeunesse offers a wide range of activities, including reading clubs for children aged 6-12 and for youth aged 12-17.

The PIKA character was created by illustrator Steve Beshwaty. Steve has illustrated numerous children's books, including the "Edmond" series, as well as contributing to a variety of magazines and other publications.
