A series of works by local artists Chrystia Mycyk and Lori Brethour-Coulter are featured in the exhibition And So the Word Had Breath -- a photographic and mixed-media exploration of the book.
Chrystia examines books through portraiture photography, depicting them as art forms that capture the thoughts and artistic strivings of humanity. Lori chooses to deconstruct the book and re-creates, in its stead, a series of three-dimensional pieces, which embody the book as object and as the repository of the human story.

Dr. Abdel Moneim Said, Director of the Al Ahram Centre for Political and Strategical Studies, Cairo will speak about Arab/North American relations in the global order. A former research fellow at the Brookings Institute, he is the author of many books and articles published in both Arabic and English.
This lecture is given in honour of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Egypt and Canada. Sponsored by the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt.

CANADA’S AIR FORCES @ EIGHTY

On the 80th anniversary of the formation of the RCAF, Library and Archives Canada is hosting CANADA’S AIR FORCES @ EIGHTY, an historical symposium co-sponsored by the Canadian Aviation Historical Society (CAHS) and the Office of Air Force Heritage and History. Through individual papers and panel presentations, CANADA’S AIR FORCES @ EIGHTY will probe Canadian military aviation -- from the formation of the Canadian Aviation Corps in 1914, through the events and personalities of the two World Wars and the Cold War, to Canada’s Air Force in the new millennium.
In addition to the formal presentations scheduled, there will be a book fair, a pre-conference workshop on archival sources and methodologies for Canadian aviation research, a private reception and tour of the Canada Aviation Museum, and a formal dinner at the historic Royal Canadian Air Force Officers’ Mess in Ottawa.

The Gouzenko Affair: The Beginnings of Canadian Counter-Espionage and Cold War Intelligence History

This two-day conference will bring together international experts on Cold War intelligence history and will include a public lecture and the unveiling of a National Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque commemorating the 1945 defection of Igor Gouzenko, a cipher clerk at the Soviet Embassy in Ottawa.
The conference is being co-sponsored by Carleton University’s Canadian Centre of Intelligence and Security Studies, the university’s Norman Patterson School of International Affairs and its Centre for Research and Canadian-Russian Relations, along with the Canadian War Museum and Library and Archives Canada.
