Bon appétit!
A celebration of Canadian cookbooks

Based on the collections of Library and Archives Canada, Bon appétit! offers an introduction to the fascinating subject of Canadian culinary history.

Beginning with an introduction to Native foods and cooking techniques, the exhibition continues through the cooking methods and recipes of the pioneers, noting the coming of science to the kitchen at the turn of the 20th century, and includes the many multicultural and regional influences that give our culinary history its distinctive flavour.

Library and Archives Canada is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Hydrographic Service by presenting the exhibition Charting the Waters of New France. On display will be several reproductions of hydrographic charts from the time of New France.

Library and Archives Canada invites you to view a selection of the manuscripts of Hector de Saint-Denys Garneau, to discover the sometimes- obscured aspects of the poet’s character and work.

First presented in Trois-Rivières in October 2003 to mark the 60th anniversary of the poet’s death, this exhibition prepared by the Literary Archives Section offers a new perspective on the work and life of de Saint-Denys Garneau.

The Canadian Film Institute (CFI) presents the best of contemporary cinema from Latin America. See films from Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Chile, Peru, El Salvador, Argentina and other Latin American nations.

Admission is $6 for CFI Members, seniors, students and Friends of Library and Archives Canada, and $9 for the general public. Tickets are available at the door only, starting at 6:30 p.m.

The Man Who Might Have Been:
An Inquiry into the Life and Death of Herbert Norman

During his remarkable life, Canadian historian and diplomat Herbert Norman helped set the course of post-war Japan. This National Film Board of Canada production takes us back to a time when the Cold War was heating up and Norman was haunted by the accusation that he was a Soviet spy.

Presented by the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of International Trade as part of Canada’s recognition of the 75th anniversary of Canada-Japan diplomatic presence.

Library and Archives Canada, in partnership with the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Department of International Trade and the Embassy of Japan, celebrates Asian Heritage Month. The evening includes a screening of The Man Who Skied Down Everest, a Canadian documentary film about Japanese skier Yuichiro Miura’s historic "downhill" run. The film won the Academy Award for feature documentary in 1975. There will also be an exhibit of items from the Library and Archives collection, artifacts from the Canadian Embassy in Japan, as well as material provided by the Government of Japan.

Grand Finale of the 2004 Broken English Writing Competition

The evening, part of the celebration of Asian Heritage Month, begins with Calgary playwright Yung Luu’s one-person play I Chink. Following the performance, the four winning entries to the Broken English Writing Competition will be announced, and the winning works will be read.

The Broken English Theatre Company is partnering with CBC Television, CBC Radio One, Ottawa City Magazine and Library and Archives Canada to present the Broken English Writing Competition among first generation Canadians residing in the nation’s capital.
