Librarians have been surfing the digital information wave for many years now. As a result, we have witnessed a transformation both in service delivery and in skills required to stay ahead in a world characterized by constant change.
Digital information has transformed the role of the information professional. The traditional functions of information professionals have been challenged by shifts in the information environment. From a user perspective, information is information. In the digital environment, the concept of publishing has evolved.
What are the impacts of the digital environment on the information community? How has the electronic work environment influenced the ways we collaborate and build information infrastructures within existing legal and institutional frameworks? What do we need to know about the technical infrastructure in order to communicate effectively with one another? How are we going to keep up with changes in information technology so that we can serve our users better and meet their expectations?
The Fall Seminar this year will look at these challenges from several perspectives.
Library and Archives Canada was formed over the past year, reflecting new realities for information management and service delivery in the digital age. Ian Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada, will speak about the rationale for the merger and some of the challenges facing information professionals working at the policy level.
Steven Cohen, developer and manager of the IM/library info-site librarystuff.net, will examine a range of topics of interest to our community and discuss the types of skills that we need to keep ahead of the deluge.
A panel chaired by Steven Cohen will focus on a major issue in the new information paradigm - digital rights management. The panel will look at digital repositories, copyright, open access and digital licensing, allowing time to address your questions. Is the time right for a "government-wide" approach to repository management?
Conference fees include lunch and attendance at the annual presentation of the Agatha Bystram Award for Excellence in Information Management.
