Nunavut became an official territory of Canada on April 1, 1999. It was established as a result of 30 years of negotiations between the Inuit, the Government of the Northwest Territories and the Government of Canada.

Most records pertaining to the history of Nunavut are deposited in the Nunavut Territorial Archives. The Archives does not have a Web site yet. All inquiries should be sent to:
