Northern Community Profiles

Manitoba's Northern communities are characterized as any community being physically located north of the 53rd parallel. Northern Manitoba is home to approximately a dozen communities, the most notable being Thompson (14,385), Flin Flon (6,572), The Pas (5,945), Leaf Rapids (1,504), Lynn Lake (1,038), and Churchill (1,089).

Road access to The Pas and Flin Flon is along highways # 60 and #10. Road access is also available to Thompson via highway #6. Limited rail access is available to other communities, including Churchill. Access to other communities is by winter roads (limited), by boat or by air.

Northern communities were established largely as resource-based towns and continue to employ residents in mining, forestry and hydro development. The only exception is Churchill which served as a major historical site and trading post during the early days of exploration and the fur trade in Canada. Today, Churchill has gained stability as a seaport of merit, as a tourism destination and as an economic, social and cultural gateway to the eastern most Kivalliq region of the Nunavut Territory.
