This Site is dedicated to the memory of Cory Smith
January 4, 1975 – December 16, 2000

The Manitoba Community Profiles web site is dedicated to the memory of Cory Smith, a young man, just 25 years old, who fought a valiant and courageous battle, first with lung cancer and then with leukemia. He was, despite his young age, an inspiration to all who came in contact with him.

Cory first joined Manitoba Intergovernmental Affairs as a summer student in 1999 and with others, was put to work developing what was then just the nub of an idea – an Internet web site featuring a comprehensive resources inventory and profile of every Manitoba community and region.

Cory’s zest, wit, skills and leadership quickly gained him respect in all arenas. As the profiles and web site took shape, they became Cory’s baby. His zest, knowledge and persuasive attitude led to numerous development and refinements.

A fun-loving, outgoing person, Cory realized that he had to savour every moment of every day, and he lived his life to the fullest at work and at play. He was a leader…. but few around him knew of his personal struggle. He did not want or seek special status or treatment. He approached each task as he did his cancer, with determination and a positive outlook.

Cory made an indelible mark on many people – anyone who knew him – and, through the Community Profiles, many who did not. The Community Profiles site is largely a result of his work and dedication.

The inspiration of this young man will continue to guide us.
