2007 CONSUMER TIPS CALENDAR AVAILABLE THROUGHOUT PROVINCE

– – –
Calendar Provides Advice and Information On Scams, Rights and Safety: Selinger

Manitoba consumers will receive helpful consumer hints in the 2007 Protect Yourself calendar now being distributed free throughout the province.

“An informed consumer is the best defence against scams and frauds in the marketplace,” said Finance Minister Greg Selinger. “The 2007 Protect Yourself calendar provides information about consumer rights and safety, and advice on how to protect yourself in the marketplace. It also has contact information for agencies that can provide assistance.”

The calendar features a new topic each month and is available in English and French. Subjects include identity theft, charitable giving, lottery scams, fraudulent weight-loss or fitness claims, being financially responsible, financial abuse, the Citizens on Patrol Program, residential tenancies, motor vehicle immobilizers, home renovations, residential home security and gambling.

The calendar is available through consumers’ groups, seniors’ organizations and bilingual service centres throughout the province. It is also available by calling the Consumers’ Bureau at 945-3800 or (toll-free) at 1-800-782-0067.

The Manitoba Consumers’ Bureau responds to consumer complaints and provides information about a variety of issues. Additional consumer tips may be found on the Canadian Consumer Gateway at http://www.consumerinformation.ca or on the Consumers’ Bureau website at http://www.gov.mb.ca/finance/cca/consumb.

The calendar is made possible through a partnership between the Consumer and Corporate Affairs Division of Manitoba Finance, the Manitoba Seniors and Healthy Aging Secretariat, Manitoba Public Insurance, the Winnipeg Police Service, the RCMP, the Manitoba Gaming Control Commission, the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba, the Competition Bureau and the Canada Revenue Agency.
