SECOND PHASE COMPLETED OF PTH 59 TWINNING PROJECT

The $41-million project to twin PTH 59 to south of Ile des Chênes is now complete and will improve an important transportation corridor, Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Ron Lemieux announced today.

“The growing traffic volumes between Winnipeg and communities in the southeast region reflect the booming local economy,” said Lemieux.  “This expanded corridor will enhance capacity, promote tourism and increase safety at the same time.”

Work on the project began with the $16-million extension of new lanes from south of the Red River Floodway to Mondor Road and included the elevation of the lanes to provide flood protection in the area.  This phase also included construction of the Seine River diversion along the east ditch of the new highway from the river to the floodway, with funding from the Canada-Manitoba Partnership Agreement on Red River Valley Flood Protection.

The second, $25-million phase completes the twinning from Mondor Road to south of PR 210 bringing the total cost of the 15.5-kilometre project to approximately $41 million.

The development of PTH 59 is part of a long-term investment strategy that has seen steady and significant increases in highway expenditures in Manitoba, said Lemieux.

“Since 1999, our government has increased investment in our highways from $177 million to a record $257 million, a 46 per cent increase.  The recent $300-million increase in Manitoba’s highway budget will enable us to address other priority infrastructure projects across the province. The new funding will increase annual provincial highway investments to almost $400 million a year.”
