LOCAL, EMERGENCY PREVENTION ORDER DECLARED FOR WATERHEN DUE TO RIVER FLOODING

An emergency prevention order has been issued for the community of Waterhen, located north of Dauphin, due to rising water levels on the Waterhen River. The Amphibex ice-breaking machine is now working to break up an ice jam at the mouth of the river, which flows into Lake Manitoba.

Four homes have been affected by the rising water and local volunteers and the Mallard Native Fire Fighters continue to manage the response including sandbagging efforts. Staff from the Manitoba Emergency Measures Organization and Manitoba Water Stewardship are also on site, monitoring river levels and providing technical assistance.

There is some precipitation in the local weather forecast for the next day. In the past 24 hours, water levels in the area rose approximately one foot. The rising water levels are mainly due to frazil ice forming on the river and it remains difficult to predict how high levels might go under these ice conditions.

A flood watch also continues to be in effect for the Dauphin River from now until late December as this river has also been flowing at a much higher-than-average rate and frazil ice may develop.

The Waterhen River rose above flood stage during the Remembrance Day weekend and has been  flowing at an unusually high rate since the summer and the fall, due to high water levels on Lake Winnipegosis.
