MSC SET TO RUN FINANCIAL PLANNER PILOT EXAM

Winnipeg, September 22, 2000 - The Manitoba Securities Commission announced today it is participating in the national pilot test of the Financial Planning Proficiency Exam. Protecting the investing public is a primary concern for the commission. "There are many groups which offer financial planning designations after rigorous testing, but obtaining such designations is not required to call yourself a financial planner. The exam sets an objective bar," says Chris Besko, Assistant Counsel with the commission.

Many industry groups have expressed their commitment to setting a high standard of knowledge and ability for financial planners. The exam was cooperatively developed with representation from the Canadian Institute of Financial Planners, the Institute of Canadian Bankers, the Canadian Securities Institute, the Canadian Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors and an educational consultant.

The commission recently published a concept proposal concerning competency for financial planners. If adopted, individuals and companies registered with the Commission who provide financial planning services would need to meet certain requirements, including passing the exam.

The commission is looking for industry volunteers who can receive confidential feedback on his or her performance as well as express their views on the exam. The exam will take place on October 2, 2000. The exam will be held at the University of Manitoba Continuing Education Downtown Campus beginning at 8:30 am.

For additional information about the exam or to register to write the exam contact Ainsley Cunningham at 945-4733. Alternatively, the Financial Planners Proficiency Exam information kit can be found on The Manitoba Securities Commission web site at www.msc.gov.mb.ca.
