Teens Challenged to Become Investor Savvy
Winnipeg - With RRSP season upon us, our thoughts have turned to saving and investing our hard-earned money. Typically, these thoughts have been reserved for the adult world. Times are changing. The Manitoba Securities Commission has issued a challenge to Manitoba teens to learn about saving and investing concepts through the "Test Your Financial I.Q." contest.
More and more young people are earning an allowance or working at part-time jobs. Company pension plans are no longer a guarantee. It is becoming necessary for young people to learn how to save and invest their money," said Ainsley Cunningham, Education Coordinator with the Manitoba Securities Commission. " It is our hope that teaching money management and investment skills at a young age will be reflected in wise money management decisions made in adulthood."
Youth between the ages of 14-18, are being encouraged to write a short 500-750 word essay explaining, if they were to win the $2500 grand prize, how they would invest it. Consideration should be given to concepts such as long and short-term goals and risk. Entries must be typed, double-spaced and in 12 point font. The contest deadline is January 31, 2003
Rules, regulations and entry forms can be found on the Manitoba Securities Commission web site at www.msc.gov.mb.ca, or you may call the Commission at 945-4733 or toll-free at 1-800-655-5244.
