Marriages
in Manitoba
are performed by authorized clergy and marriage commissioners who are
registered with Vital Statistics.
Couples can choose a religious ceremony solemnized by a registered
member of the clergy or a civil ceremony with a licenced
marriage commissioner.
Before the ceremony, the marriage licence
and other documents are given to the clergy or marriage commissioner who
completes the Registration of Marriage. This form is signed by the
parties to the marriage and their witnesses after the ceremony. The
clergy or marriage commissioner sends the registration to Vital
Statistics where it is registered, coded for statistical reporting and
microfilmed for permanent retention.
It is from this Registration of Marriage
that certificates are issued.
