The Learning English section of the website has information for Adult EAL
learners, employers of EAL speakers, teachers, prospective teachers, and
volunteers.
Manitoba
is implementing a change from the term English as a Second Language (ESL)
programs to English as an Additional Language (EAL) programs. Both
terms (ESL and EAL) are used interchangeably on this site during the transition
period. For more information, see Changing Terminology from ESL to
EAL. (pdf)
Adult EAL learners all have different educational backgrounds and experiences
learning English. They also have different goals and needs. This section is
intended to provide learners with information about the various language
programs in Manitoba
, program eligibility, language assessment and language learning materials and
strategies. Information about the language levels needed for various courses,
occupations or tests is also available in this location. See Canadian
Language Benchmarks: A Summary of Courses, Programs, Occupations and Tests that
have been Benchmarked in Manitoba in September 2003 (pdf, 178KB).
Parents looking for EAL instruction for their children will also find a link
to information provided by Manitoba Education Training and Youth.
Employers who want to help their EAL employees improve their English skills
or want to help their workforce develop greater understanding and effectiveness
in cross-cultural communication will also find information in this section.
Adult EAL instruction is an area of educational expertise that is both
complex and dynamic, with a growing sense of professionalism. The Learning
English section will provide prospective teachers with information to help in
their TESL training and career planning. Experience, working Adult EAL teachers
will also find information to help them in their continuing professional
development as well as the teaching/learning process.
Volunteers are also an important resource in Adult EAL
instruction and will find information on these pages to help them develop
effectiveness in working with EAL learners.
