Environment

At Manitoba Hydro, one of our highest values is to be proactive in protecting the environment. In full recognition that the economy and the environment are mutually dependent Manitoba Hydro integrates environmentally responsible practices in all aspects of its business.

Environmental protection at Manitoba Hydro is often associated with large-scale capital projects.

It may involve a $30 million investment like the Selkirk Generating Station fuel switching project which replaced coal with natural gas, virtually eliminating emissions of mercury, other metals, and sulphur dioxide, and significantly reducing emissions of particulate matter, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides to the air environment.

It may also involve environmental studies and public consultation associated with a large scale project such as the future Wuskwatim Generating Station, or another year in our forest enhancement program, now in its second 10 year term.

It may also be associated with the work of staff whose time is fully dedicated to our environmental protection and monitoring programs, climate change initiatives, Power Smart programs, energy efficiency initiatives, environmental research and development, environmental partnership initiatives, or implementation of agreements that address project effects.

Environmental protection at Manitoba Hydro also takes the form of day-to-day efforts by management and staff who are simply performing their every-day duties and responsibilities.
