Greg Thompson was first elected to the House of Commons in 1988. He was re-elected in 1997, 2000, 2004 and 2006. Most recently, he served as Critic for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. Prior to this, he served as Critic for Public Accounts, for Health, for Regional Development, for the Treasury Board and for Human Resources Development.

Mr. Thompson has been a member of the standing committees on Fisheries and Oceans, on Health and on Public Accounts and numerous related subcommittees such as on Whistleblowing, on the Non-Medicinal use of Drugs, on Combatting Corruption and on Agenda and Procedure.

Mr. Thompson was Co-Chair of the Canada-United States Inter-Parliamentary Group from November 2004 until February 2006. Founded in 1959, the aim of the Group is to exchange information and promote better understanding between Canadian and US parliamentarians on common problems and concerns, as well as differences, in the relations between the two countries.

Mr. Thompson is active in his community, serving on the Board of Theatre New Brunswick, the Charlotte County Hospital, and the New Brunswick Drug and Alcohol Dependency Commission. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education at St. Thomas University, and was a teacher and financial planner prior to entering politics.

He is married to Linda and has two sons.
