![]() Underground - Investigating Subterranean FeaturesThe First World War's Western Front included extensive systems of underground tunnels, subways and dugouts. Ground over similar war-time excavations has settled or collapsed in a number of places at both Vimy and Beaumont-Hamel during the past 10 years. A detailed investigation of these hidden features is required to help ensure the health and safety of employees and visitors in public areas. Completing this work in a safe manner, which also respects the cultural integrity of the sites involved, presents many technical challenges. The results will help to identify tools to better manage the changing land cover. ![]() |
