Reopening of Library and Archives Canada Public Research Areas on Tuesday, October 10, 2006

We are pleased to announce that the public research areas on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Library and Archives Canada (LAC) building at 395 Wellington Street in Ottawa are now open as scheduled.

In February 2006, LAC launched a service improvement initiative in order to better meet the needs of its clients through a comprehensive approach to the dissemination of Canada's documentary heritage. This initiative included extensive renovations to the public research areas of the building at 395 Wellington Street. The research areas were closed temporarily on September 29 to complete the work.

All public research areas are open; however, some minor work must be carried out to complete the renovations. This may cause some disruption to different service areas over the next few weeks, and will affect hours of operation until the end of November 2006 as follows:

2nd Floor

  • Jacob M. Lowy Collection: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Reference Collection: 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
  • Reference Services: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

3rd Floor

  • Textual Documents Consultation: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
  • Audiovisual Documents Consultation: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
  • Restricted Documents Consultation: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
  • Microforms Consultation: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
  • Lockers: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
  • Special Collections Consultation: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Self-Serve Digital Copying: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Canadian Genealogy Centre: 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

In addition to enabling LAC to offer improved services, the renovations to the research areas provide the opportunity to remind clients of their responsibilities as users of the collection and the facilities of LAC. Over the past years, many cultural institutions worldwide have reviewed and reinforced security measures to respond to emergencies and potential threats.

Therefore, as of October 10, existing security measures at LAC will be systematically applied. Accordingly, clients are reminded that they must:

  • leave outerwear and accessories in the lockers located on the first floor;
  • limit the number of documents they bring to research areas;
  • use clear plastic bags to carry belongings;
  • have their bags inspected when they enter and leave research areas.

We look forward to serving you in our new research spaces!
