BIO 2005 - Philadelphia, PA

The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) represents more than 1,000 biotechnology companies,
academic institutions, state biotechnology centers and related organizations in all 50 U.S. states
and 33 other nations. BIO members are involved in the research and development of health-care,
agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology products.
Each year, BIO hosts the world's premier biotechnology conference, bringing together scientists,
entrepreneurs and innovators from around the world. BIO is the largest biotechnology convention in
the world with 16,867 registrants and 1,525 exhibitors (48 states, 61 nations) attending the 2005 event.
Highlights
- Manitoba purchased 1000 square feet for the Manitoba Pavilion at BIO
2005.
- The Manitoba Exhibitors included: Cangene Corporation, Public Health
Agency of Canada - National Microbiology Lab, Lombard Life Sciences, Manitoba
MindSet, Medicure Inc., National Research Council - Institute for Biodiagnostics,
Red River College, University of Manitoba, and Manitoba Energy, Science
and Technology. Representatives from a number of non-exhibiting organizations
in Manitoba also attended the convention. In total, 56 Manitobans were
in attendance at BIO 2005.
- Manitoba companies participated in BIO 2005 to profile their life science
capabilities; to develop collaborative relationships with companies and
institutions from jurisdictions that have complementary capabilities; and
to secure research and/or sales contracts.
- Premier Doer, Premier Charest of Quebec and Premier Campbell of British
Columbia participated in the official opening of the Canadian Pavilion;
other participants in the opening included Hon Jim Peterson, Minister of
International Trade Canada; Robert Fonberg; Deputy Minister of International
Trade Canada; Neil Yeates, Assistant Deputy Minister of Industry Canada;
Peter Brenders, President of BIOTECanada.
- A joint reception wads held by the Province of Manitoba and the State
of South Australia. The reception attracted 175 invited delegates from
Manitoba, South Australia, Minnesota and other jurisdictions. The reception
was organized to enable networking between representatives of these jurisdictions
and to profile the bioscience expertise within Manitoba and South Australia
to the other international BIO delegates.
Past Accomplishments at the annual BIO Conference
Manitoba has had been at BIO since 2000. The Province's participation has
raised the profile of Manitoba's life sciences sector nationally and internationally.
In particular, the Province's life science strengths in infectious diseases,
cardiovascular diseases, and oncology as well as research on the development
of crops with enhanced quality and agronomic traits have received special
attention.
Manitoba companies have also used BIO Conferences to develop linkages with international
venture capital funds and to market their contract manufacturing capabilities.
