New Peat Moss Plant Opens - Packaging facility built in Richer will supply international marketNearly a year after a fire destroyed the peat moss plant in Giroux, Manitoba, Premier Tech officially opened a new $14.5-million peat moss packaging plant in Richer (not far from the old plant). The plant is being billed by the company as the most efficient peat moss packaging plant in the world. Premier will use the Richer plant as a show piece to market its packaging equipment - which it builds and designs in-house at its main plant in Riviere-du-Loup, Quebec. Premier could have built a plant in many locations in North America (Premier already has facilities in Minnesota, Saskatchewan, Alberta, New Brunswick, Novas Scotia and Quebec) but decided to rebuild in Manitoba because of the steady labour force. Other reasons for rebuilding in Manitoba included support from the R.M. of Ste Anne, the United Food and Commercial Workers union negotiating a long term contract, and the support of the province in the form of a $3-million loan. The plant will have an annual payroll of $2.2-million and employ 57 people when full operational. The main market for peat moss is the central U.S. Much of the peat moss produced at the plant will be sold through stores such as Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Lowes.
