Genealogy is the study of the lineage of an individual. To trace lineage or family history, genealogists often make use of records that were created during an individual's lifetime. This can include records of birth or baptism, marriage, death or burial, immigration records, employment records, records relating to the ownership of land, and records that document political events that may have had an influence on the life of an individual.

The Archives of Manitoba holds many records that are useful to genealogists. Before visiting the archives, genealogists are encouraged to collect as much information as possible from family, friends and published sources such as newspaper articles, community histories and historical accounts which are available at libraries. Gathering information prior to coming to the archives will enable our staff to assist you better.
