Livestock Stewardship

On March 3, 2000 the Government of Manitoba announced the Livestock Stewardship Initiative to improve monitoring, land use planning and industry quality assurance.

Specific actions that are being taken to support the Initiative include:

  • Increased environmental monitoring of soil and groundwater impacts and increased inspections of manure storage facilities;

  • Updating the province's groundwater sensitivity mapping;

  • Independent review of the present state of soils and the sustainability of long-term manure application to the land;

  • Assistance to municipalities that currently do not have land use plans to adopt plans and join planning districts in order to address livestock development, quality of life and environmental protection issues;

  • A one-time 50% cost-sharing grant to assist municipalities to update existing by-laws in a timely manner;

  • Expansion of the mandate of the provincial technical review committees to include the evaluation of cumulative impacts of the livestock industry and improved public access to technical review committee reports;

  • Release of the public discussion document on the growth of the Manitoba livestock industry in June 2000; and

  • Mandating an independent panel to review issues related to the livestock industry and to report back to the government with its findings and recommendations by the end of 2000.
