A flood sheet for
the
Assiniboine River is attached.
It also shows conditions and forecasts for the Red River in Winnipeg
and for Red Deer Lake.
The Assiniboine crest is
between Virden and Sioux Valley Reserve. The crest is moving slowly due to the
extensive water storage in the valley floodplain. Additional rises from Sioux
Valley to Brandon should be less than one-third of a foot.
Flooding of agricultural
lands in the Assiniboine Valley is expected to end May 20-23 in the portion
from Miniota to Grand Valley and about May 26 in the Shellmouth area, based on
little precipitation. Other portions are already below flood stage or will be
in the next few days.
The controlled conduit at
Shellmouth Dam will not be opened until the spillway flow has declined to 1300
cfs, which is projected to occur on May 29 with favourable weather. After that
it will be opened gradually to maintain an outflow of 1300 cfs. All members of
the Regulation Liaison Committee are in agreement on this.
Red Deer Lake declined
nearly a quarter foot at the community of Red Deer Lake since yesterday, but
this was aided by a light south wind. The access road to the Community has now
been cleared of debris and re-opened. Work on the clean-up of buildings will
begin in the next few days and will gradually expand during the next few weeks
as water levels decline further.
Red River levels will be
holding quite steady for the next 10 days due to runoff from last week’s
rainfall in Minnesota. The level in downtown Winnipeg will be between 11.0 and
11.5 feet until after the Victoria Day long weekend. The normal summer level
is 6.3 feet.
The weather forecast calls
for little or no precipitation in southern Manitoba from today through the
weekend.
