UPDATED FORECAST FOR THE FISHER RIVER

May 29, 2006 (5:00 p.m.)

  • This morning’s flood report indicated that the Fisher River might crest at levels higher than during the spring of 2004. The spring flood of 2004 was greater than those of 2005 and 2006 snowmelt crests, but somewhat less than that of 1986. This preliminary forecast was based on very limited information on river levels.

  • Information on levels at various gauges operated by Water Stewardship staff in the Interlake Region has since become available. It shows that levels continue to rise on both the West Fisher and East Fisher. The two branches combine in the Peguis Reserve.

  • Levels on the West Fisher this afternoon were slightly higher than the crests of April, 2004. Levels on the East Fisher appeared to be rising more slowly and were still lower than the crests of 2004.

  • Levels on the main stem in the Peguis First Nation were still well below the 2004 crest this morning but will continue to rise with a crest likely late tomorrow or Wednesday (May 30-31). It appears the crest at the High School Bridge will be near 739 feet or very close to that of 2004. The level at this location this morning was 735 feet.

  • The forecast will be further updated near noon tomorrow (Tuesday), based on additional water levels from Water Stewardship staff in the Interlake Region.
