Water Information
FLOOD REPORT FOR MANITOBA
May
31, 2006.
A flood sheet for the
Assiniboine River for May 31, 2006 is attached. It also shows
conditions and forecasts for the Red River in Winnipeg and for Red Deer Lake.
-
The flood warning for the
Fisher River was ended yesterday afternoon. A high water warning remains in
effect for downstream portion in the Fisher River Reserve. The river has crested
at all points except at the Fisher River Reserve near the mouth of the river,
where an additional rise of a quarter foot is expected today.
-
Levels of the Fisher River
had declined slightly at the Townsite (High School Bridge) as of this morning
and appeared to be at the crest from the Southerland Bridge to Lake St. George.
Crests at most points in the Peguis Reserve are higher than during April of 2005
and 2006 but 1.0-1.5 feet lower than the crests of 2004. Many homes had flooding
problems on Monday but most of this flooding was due to overland flooding. River
levels have affected only a few very low homes. Few problems are expected at the
Fisher Reserve where low level homes have been protected by sandbagging during
the past few days.
-
Levels of the West Fisher
River had declined as much as 1.5 feet from the crest as of this morning, while
the East Fisher River had declined up to 0.7 feet. Manitoba Water Stewardship
staff in the Interlake Region continue to monitor river levels several times per
day. Overland flooding continues to subside but many fields still have standing
water in low areas.
-
Levels of the upper
Assiniboine River continue to rise as a result of last weekend’s rainfall. A
minor crest is expected from St. Lazare to Brandon during the next 2-7 days
depending on location. However the river is expected to remain within its banks
in this portion and at points further downstream.
-
The water level of Shellmouth
Reservoir changed very little since yesterday due to increased inflows from the
weekend rain. Both the inflow and outflow were near 1750 cfs this morning. The
Reservoir level was at 1410.5 feet which is two feet above the spillway
elevation. Due to the increase in inflows, it will now take until June 12, even
with favourable weather, before the outflow from the Reservoir declines to 1300
cfs. The conduit will remain closed until the spillway flow has decreased to
1300 cfs at which time the outflow will be held at 1300 cfs until the reservoir
water level falls to 1405 feet or so.
-
The level of Red Deer Lake is
not available since the gauge is out of water. Manitoba Water Stewardship staff
from The Pas will set up a new gauge during the next few days. The clean-up at
the community of Red Deer Lake continues on a limited basis, awaiting further
declines in the lake level.
-
The level of the Red River in
downtown Winnipeg has declined to 7.9 feet and is expected to fall to the normal
summer level of 6.3 feet by June 8 based on normal weather conditions.
-
The weather forecast from
Environment Canada calls for a chance of showers or thundershowers over southern
Manitoba today and tomorrow with dry weather from Friday through Sunday.
