Promises,
promises
Domestic violence follows a vicious cycle that often explodes
in violence or other abuse. Afterward, the abuser is full of sadness
and often promises: "It will never happen again."
But
it does happen again.
And again and again.
"I keep thinking
this can't be
happening to someone I know." |
The cycle cannot be broken without help.
|
What also happens, again and again, is friends and family
see the signs but don't believe it could happen to someone they know.
They may notice signs like:
- frequent "accident" injuries
- increased isolation from family and friends
- jumpiness
- depression
- fear of the partner
- dwindling self-esteem
- partner's jealousy or possessiveness
- constant criticism from partner
"I think it's
abuse, but I'm not sure." |
|
Sound like anyone you know?
Abuse happens among people who are married, single, old, young,
rich, poor, professional, blue-collar, unemployed, in loving relationships,
heterosexual, homosexual, drinkers and non-drinkers and of every ethnic
group.
Why doesn't she just leave?
Some of the reasons why victims of emotional or physical abuse
stay in abusive relationships are fear, low self-esteem, a sense of helplessness,
economic dependence, or "for the children's sake."
The littlest victims
Sadly,
children who witness or experience abuse grow up believing abuse is part
of a normal relationship. As they learn what they live, many will grow
up to be abusers or abuse victims themselves.
"I worry abou
that family,
but I don't know what to do."
