Consumer and Corporate Affairs
A Division of Manitoba Finance
In Premier Gary Doer's announcement on September 25, 2002 the former ministry of
consumer and corporate affairs will become a division of finance, led by current minister Greg Selinger.
Did you know that work done by Consumer and Corporate Affairs affects every Manitoban
every day? That's because you, along with other consumers and business people like
you, buy and sell millions of products and services on a daily basis.
Most of the time you don't run into problems. That may be because we work hard at
trying to prevent problems by administering about 30 acts. Important laws like the
Consumer Protection Act, Business Practices Act, Insurance Act and the Residential
Tenancies Act. These help protect consumers and businesses, landlords and tenants.
We incorporate and register businesses and charities, and license door-to-door sellers.
Businesses benefit too, because the Business Practices Act helps to make sure that ethical
businesses, the vast majority, face less unfair competition from unethical businesses. The
Public Utilities Board, Companies Office, Manitoba Securities Commission, Land Titles and
Personal Property Registry are just some of our other branches and agencies.
Building a confident consumer force with a range of skills and knowledge is also one of
our top priorities. Our education and information programs "help people to help
themselves."
