General municipal elections are held every four years on the fourth Wednesday in October. This includes elections for municipal councillors and the head of council (Mayor or Reeve). Elections for school trustees take place on the same day.

The next general municipal election will be held on Wednesday, October 25, 2006.

Elections in the resort communities of Victoria Beach, Dunnottar and Winnipeg Beach are held on the fourth Friday in July. In 2006, Election Day is Friday, July 28, 2006.

The Municipal Councils and School Boards Elections Act sets out the process for electing members of council under The Municipal Act and The City of Winnipeg Charter, and school trustees under The Public Schools Act.

The Municipal Councils and School Boards Elections Act came into effect on January 1, 2006, replacing The Local Authorities Election Act. The new Municipal Councils and School Boards Elections Act streamlines, modernizes and introduces new efficiencies in the local election process.
