Black History Month

The tradition of celebrating Black History during February goes back to 1926 and the efforts of pioneering Black historian, Dr. Carter G. Woodson. In December of 1995, the Parliament of Canada passed a motion officially designating February as Black History Month. This initiative was an acknowledgement of the long and rich history of Black Canadians and their contributions to Canada and the world.

Every year Canadians are invited to take part in the festivities that commemorate the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present, during Black History Month. This is a time to celebrate their many contributions which have allowed Canada to become the multicultural and diverse nation it is today.

Veterans Affairs Canada profiles the Second Construction Battalion, and the military legacy of Canada's Black community.
