Minister's Medal Presentation

"On May 9, 2003, the Minister of Veterans Affairs had an opportunity to honour one of Canada's surviving First World War Veterans.

Mr. Harold Radford is one of two First World War Veterans who resides at the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, Halifax, NS. Camp Hill is a long term care facility which is home to 175 Veteran residents. Harold Radford is 106 years old and is a long time resident of Camp Hill. He is a Veteran of the Nova Scotia Regiment, Canadian Expeditionary Force, and was posted to Vladivostok, Siberia in the later years of the First World War.

The Minister of Veterans Affairs, the Honourable Dr. Rey D. Pagtakhan, presented the Queens Golden Jubilee Medal to Jim Radford on his father's behalf. The Medal commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of her Majesty's reign as Queen of Canada and is awarded to Canadians who have made a significant contribution to their fellow citizens, their community or to Canada.

In presenting the Medal to Harold Radford the Minister remarked:

"By awarding this Medal to Harold Radford, we not only honour Harold's service to his country , but all Veterans who served Canada when called upon."

The Minister also visited Mrs. Alice Strike, a First World War Veteran and resident of Camp Hill. Mrs. Strike was awarded the Queens Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002.

In addition to Jim Radford, the Minister was joined by Don Ford, President and Chief Executive Officer, Capital District Health Authority, and by the staff of Camp Hill.
