Our Nation's Pride: A Commemorative Writing Contest

Official Rules and Regulations

  • The name of the 2002 Veterans' Week Writing Contest is Our Nation's Pride: A Commemorative Writing Contest. Entries must explore why students are proud of our country's wartime or peacekeeping veterans and/or history.

  • Educators should be aware that historical information is available on the Veterans Affairs Canada Web site at www.vac-acc.gc.ca.

  • Educators should encourage the participation of as many students as possible and submit the work of all eligible students who write a composition.

  • Entrants must reside in Veterans Affairs Canada Prairie Region, which includes Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and must be enrolled in grades 9 - 12.

  • Entries must be in essay format, must be in either English or French and must be less than 500 words in length.

  • The contest winner will be chosen by a panel of judges from Veterans Affairs Canada.

  • The Grand Prize is trip for two from a city in the Prairie Region where WestJet Airlines operates to Ottawa, Ontario. Flight, accommodations and a daily stipend for four days will be provided.

  • The winner and a parent/guardian will be responsible for travel and associated costs to a city where WestJet Airlines operates.

  • Three other finalist prizes will also be awarded. The winning and finalist entries will be posted on the Veterans Affairs Canada Web site.

  • With their submissions, students must include: name, age, home address, telephone number, school name and grade, preferred language of correspondence, and how they found out about the writing contest.

  • Only one entry is permitted per student, although several entries from the same school or classroom may be mailed together.

  • All entries should be postmarked before midnight November 15, 2002 and sent by mail, e-mail or fax to:

  • Veterans Affairs Canada employees and their children are not eligible to win prizes.

  • Entries will not be returned and become the property of Veterans Affairs Canada, which reserves the right to reprint in full or in part any entry for the purpose of promoting future contests, Veterans' Week activities or other initiatives.
