Bluefield High School - "Reliving VE Day"

During the 2002/2003 school year, fifteen students from Bluefield High School in Hampshire, Prince Edward Island interviewed VE Day veterans and seniors about their struggles, hardships, and memories. Ten of the students were from the grade 11/12 drama class taught by Ms. Hastelow and a UPEI student teacher, Ms. Skrok. The other five students were from Ms. Parker's Grade 12 History class. To gain a better understanding of the situation of each veteran, interviews were not only about VE Day, but also about all the suffering the war had brought upon the veterans. The students then created a twenty minute play using the real stories and memories from their interviews.

The idea for this project was brought forward by Richard Baker, teacher-librarian, who explained the purpose of the project, what it might consist of, and the knowledge the students would gain from the experience. Mr. Baker applied for a government grant funded by Technology PEI called Between Generations. The funding that was received helped purchase needed supplies and electronics for the project, tape recorders for the interviews, a digital camera for taking pictures, and a digital audio recording system.
