Manitoba's Commitment to Housing

Manitoba's Commitment
to Housing

Housing Matters

With a bustling economy, boundless opportunities and a growing population, Manitoba continues to be a great place to call home. Such success drives a demand for more and different types of housing to meet the present and future needs of Manitobans. Quality housing makes people healthier and contributes to community pride, strong neighbourhoods and vital communities.

The Manitoba government is working to build and revitalize neighbourhoods by providing a variety of quality, affordable, accessible housing options for Manitobans of all ages and incomes across the province. Increasing the availability of affordable housing is an important part of supporting a growing population and thriving economy. Vibrant neighbourhoods, where people can raise families and seniors can live safely and independently, help nurture the community spirit of our entire province.

Making Progress

Working with other governments and the community, the Manitoba government continues to make progress in this important area. More than $61 million has been invested in housing around the province to repair, rehabilitate or build approximately 3,200 units of safe and affordable housing. This includes new, energy-efficient homes, construction of apartment buildings, as well as much-needed repairs to older homes and apartments, all for the benefit of low to-moderate-income Manitobans.

Together with the federal government and City of Winnipeg, the Manitoba government continues to strive to create affordable housing opportunities for more Manitobans. The collaboration is working.

North, South, East, West: Work Continues

Recognizing the unique housing needs of northern Manitobans, the province worked with the community to develop a Northern Housing Strategy. This plan looks at using new technologies that result in affordable, energy-efficient housing and job skills training for local residents.

Infill housing projects continue to have a positive effect on neighbourhoods in Winnipeg and Brandon. Replacing or renovating abandoned houses and converting them into quality, attractive homes for low-income families has given many disadvantaged Manitobans the opportunity to become first-time homeowners. Projects, such as those already completed in the William Whyte, Spence Street and Lord Selkirk neighbourhoods, provide quality, affordable housing for families, improve the overall look of the neighbourhoods, increase property values for area residents and generate community pride.

Waverley West, a new housing development planned for southwest Winnipeg, will help answer the need for more housing options as consumers continue to respond to the province's thriving economy and brisk local real estate market. The provincial government, through the Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corporation, owns a portion of this land. The new community the province is envisioning will feature green space and pedestrian-friendly urban design surrounding a variety of different types of housing and accessible design elements.

Some of the land set aside for Waverley West was actually purchased 30 years ago by the Province of Manitoba in anticipation of the housing demand we are experiencing today. This new development will connect to existing infrastructure and provide Manitobans with more housing options.

Manitoba's profits from Waverley West will be used to create even more affordable housing and further revitalize Winnipeg's inner city neighbourhoods. The province's investment, through the Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corporation, in the Royalwood housing development has already resulted in a commitment to invest $1 million into affordable, inner city housing, a strong and ongoing commitment to inner city development.
