The Manitoba Nutrition Survey is being carried out through a
partnership between The University of Manitoba, Manitoba Health and
Health Canada. It is one of a series of provincial surveys that will
contribute to a national picture of what Canadians are eating. The
last time this sort of information was collected was in 1972, so it
has been a long time since we have had a clear picture of dietary
habits and trends.
Survey results will be used by health authorities and other groups
to assist in the development of nutrition strategies, health services
and community programs. The Manitoba survey will also contribute to
the building of a national nutrition database to improve the
monitoring of the safety and healthfulness of our national food
supply.
In the Fall and Spring of 1998-99 over 1500 randomly selected
individuals in twenty communities throughout Manitoba took part in
in-depth interviews. Information was gathered on daily food intakes,
usual eating patterns and knowledge, beliefs and attitudes regarding
food and health.
This large amount of complex data is currently being analyzed; it
is expected that results will be available in 2004.
