Restructuring of Manitoba's Child and Family
Services System
Plans for a major restructuring of Manitoba child and families services have
been developed and will be implemented through the Aboriginal
Justice Inquiry – Child Welfare Initiative (AJI-CWI).
The AJI-CWI was established
in 2000 in response to a recommendation made earlier that year
by the Aboriginal Justice Implementation
Commission (AJIC). The AJIC recommended that the Government
of Manitoba work with First Nations and Metis leaders to
develop a plan that would result in First Nations and Metis communities
developing and delivering child welfare services.
The Government of Manitoba is represented on the AJI-CWI by
the Ministers and departmental officials from Manitoba Aboriginal
and Northern Affairs and Manitoba Family Services and Housing.
The Strategic
Initiatives and Program Support Branch and the Child Protection Branch are co-managing
Manitoba Family Services and Housing participation in the
AJI-CWI.
The AJI-CWI's
web site provides extensive
background information on the initiative and reports on
its planning and implementation activities. The web site is
jointly
managed
by Manitoba Family Services and Housing and the Aboriginal
parties to the AJI-CWI.
