2003 - 2004      Canadian Community Health Survey
Statistics Canada

Synopsis: Conducted by Statistics Canada as a Department of National Defense Mental Health and Well-Being Supplement DND Forces. In addition Corporate Planning Division, Veterans Affairs Canada has purchased two questions on this survey. Currently Ste. Anne's Hospital is developing a secondary data analysis proposal.

2003 - 2004     Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging
Canadian Health Institute

Synopsis: Protocol development of a research initiative to collect longitudinal data of interest to Veterans Affairs Canada. Research Directorate will participate in protocol development for this project.

2003 - 2004     Falls Prevention Research
Carole Landry, Veterans Affairs Canada, Ontario Regional Office / Department of National Defense / Ste. Anne's Hospital, Montreal Quebec.

Synopsis: This is a research study to identify the factors which may reduce or prevent falls by our clients. Identification of data requirements began in October 2003.

2003 - 2004     Gulf War File Review
Danielle Sonier, Research Directorate Veterans Affairs Canada

Synopsis: File review of gulf war clients to improve our understanding of gulf war veteran health issues. As of November 2003 data analysis was underway.

2003 - 2004     Gulf War Linkage Project
Statistics Canada

Synopsis: This project will set up an ongoing surveillance program to monitor mortality and cancer incidence among the cohort GW veterans.

2003 - 2005     Multi-Site Research Project
University of Alberta and Social Science and Humanities Research Council

Synopsis: Study to understand the cost of caring for frail, older adults and younger adults. There will be a meeting with the preliminary investigators in April 2004.

2003 - 2005     Operational Stress Injury Support Services
Kathy Darte, Canadian Forces - Modernization Task Force

Synopsis: A project to study the impact of this program on participants and volunteer facilitators.

2003 - 2004     Secondary Analysis, Canadian Forces Survey
Dr. Victor Marshall, University of North Carolina, North Carolina.

Synopsis: To conduct a secondary analysis on a Canadian Forces data set to identify relationships with Post Traumatic Stress (PTSD), chronic pain and career/employment issues.

2003 - 2004     Ste. Anne's Hospital / Department of National Defense
Ste. Anne's Hospital, Montreal Quebec

Synopsis: Project to determine the feasibility of Veterans Affairs Canada participation in a large scale longitudinal data collection project being planned by the Department of National Defense. Discussions started in October 2003 and the project may start in April 2004.

2003 - 2004     Ste. Anne's Hospital / Veterans Affairs Canada Centre of Learning
Ste. Anne's Hospital, Montreal Quebec.

Synopsis: Currently a proposal is underway at Ste. Anne's Hospital to develop research and a clinical database for the new VAC mental health network. The Centre will specialize in research on mental health, chronic pain and dementia.

2003 - 2004     Veterans Independence Program Historical Study
Dr. John Strictures, Trent University

Synopsis: This will be a policy review study of the Veterans Affairs Canada, Veterans Independence Program which will assist health reform and identify related implications among long term care within a wider Canadian population. The final report is due March 2004.

2003 - 2004     VETLINK
Research Directorate

Synopsis: Research Directorate will provide support to VETLINK to strengthen its viability as an emerging research network linked to Veterans Affairs Canada. There has been activity on this issue as of November 2003.
