Hockey Is Alive and Well at Library and Archives Canada!
Backcheck: A Hockey Retrospective
www.collectionscanada.ca/hockey/index-e.html
Ottawa, February 21, 2005 - The 2004-2005 hockey season has been cancelled
and with it, the Stanley Cup playoffs. But this is not unique in the annals of
Canadian professional hockey. Did you know that the only other time this happened
was in 1919 when the Stanley Cup championship was abandoned in mid-series because
of the Spanish flu epidemic?
Library and Archives Canada has an exciting website that can give you more
information on not only the 1919 tragedy, but on the players, the teams and the
games which shaped the history of our national sport.
Backcheck: A Hockey Retrospective explores the history and development
of hockey using English and French language newspaper articles, rare photos and
manuscripts, based on material from Library and Archives Canada's collections.
The website also contains valuable information for researchers and hockey buffs.
There is also a parallel site, Backcheck: Hockey for Kids, geared
to a younger audience and featuring curriculum tie-ins and classroom activities
with a hockey theme, see www.collectionscanada.ca/hockey/kids/index-e.html.
