Websites

These general websites can direct the reader to enormous resources on the Northwest Campaign. Library and Archives Canada's site leads to AMICUS, the catalogue of its collections, which can be searched on-line, free of charge. "AMICUS" also provides locations for material in libraries throughout Canada. Clients must register to obtain username and password. Subject terms of use when searching the catalogues of Library and Archives Canada and other libraries include:

  • Riel Rebellion, 1885
  • Riel, Louis
  • Métis
  • Northwest, Canadian - History - 1870-1905
  • Canada - History - 1867-1914

The Library and Archives Canada's site also leads to ArchiviaNet, through which many of the archival records, particularly official government records, may be searched by descriptive keywords. Such a search is a good starting point for the holdings of Library and Archives Canada, but should certainly not be regarded as complete.

Canadian War Museum
www.warmuseum.ca/cwm/cwme.asp

  • This website directs the user both to the Museum's excellent library resources on the Campaign and to the war art collections. It is intended that the most complete list of fatal casualties of the 1885 Campaign will be posted on this site.

Directorate of History and Heritage
www.dnd.ca/hr/dhh

  • This site is less useful at present, but is growing. It includes a list of all Directorate publications, a number of which are relevant to the Northwest Campaign.

Batoche National Historic Park
www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/sk/batoche/index_e.asp

  • Parks Canada's website includes both general information on the Park today and an online guided tour of the site.

Online Resources for Canadian Heritage
www.civilization.ca/orch/www00_e.html

  • Part of the Virtual Museum's Library website at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Included is a section of links for the 1885 Northwest Campaign.

Canadian Archival Resources on the Internet
www.archivescanada.ca/car/menu.html

  • This site is run from the University of Saskatchewan. It links to the Canadian Archival Information Network, a rapidly growing inventory of archival resources which is at present, particularly strong in material held in western Canada and is of interest to anyone working on any aspect of the 1885 experience.

Canadian Military Heritage Project
www.rootsweb.com/~canmil/index.html

  • Organized by military event and theme and provides directions to both published and archival information, as well as additional links to military-related sites on the Internet.

Internet Public Library
www.ipl.org/

  • Links websites by subject, including detailed references to all aspects of Canadian military history.
