What is it?

The Canadian Literature Research Service (CLRS) offers researchers specialized reference, research, advisory and bibliographic services and prepares material for exhibitions on Canadian literature and literary publishing and reading lists featuring selected Canadian authors and themes in Canadian literature. In addition, CLRS develops electronic products designed to provide access to Canadian literature via the Internet.

Canadian literature is one of the National Library's three areas of special emphasis, and our holdings in this subject area are rich and varied, making the Library an excellent resource for the study of Canadian literature and literary publishing.

The Canadian Literature Research Service is based on the National Library's collections of books by Canadian writers (including popular literature such as science fiction, fantasy, detective fiction and romance), reference works in various media, small magazines and literary periodicals, Canadian children's literature, rare books, spoken-word recordings, selected newspapers, and government documents. From our literary manuscripts collection, the papers of Canadian writers such as Marie-Claire Blais, Michael Ondaatje, Carol Shields and Michel Tremblay , and Canadian presses like Coach House Press and Éditions du Sentier, among many others, are available for consultation.
