How to Cite Archival Sources

Definitions

Footnote
If an archival document belonging to Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is cited in the text of a work, a complete reference to the document should appear in the form of a footnote.

A complete reference must contain all the elements necessary to locate the document and to place it in its descriptive context. The individual elements of the reference will vary according to the format of the archival document.

Credit line
If an archival document belonging to LAC is reproduced as an illustration or facsimile, the credit line must include as a minimum the name of the author or creator (if known), the name of Library and Archives Canada and the reproduction copy number. This credit line must be placed directly below or beside the reproduction.

Any alterations to the image, such as cropping or retouching, must be indicated in the credit line by using the words "detail" or "based on".

For diffusion on television, movie film, video or in a slide presentation, a single credit to Library and Archives Canada in the acknowledgement is acceptable.

Should you wish to publish a reproduction of a document still under copyright, you will need to obtain written consent of the copyright owner before proceeding with the use. Simply citing the archival source in the credit line is not adequate. See Copyright Restrictions.
