Family History Library

The Family History Library (FHL) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Salt Lake City, Utah, holds over 2.5 million microfilm reels of genealogical records from many countries. Those reels can be borrowed through their many Family History Centerstm located worldwide.

The Family History Library has assigned its own reel numbers to their copies of Library and Archives Canada microfilm, such as our census returns and passenger lists. Consult the Family History Library Catalog to find the item description in the catalogue.

The Family History Library's Search for Ancestors database allows you to search indexed resources, such as the 1881 Canadian Census.

How to use the Family History Library Catalog

To identify FHL microfilm numbers, use the Title Search box and enter the exact wording as listed below:

For census:

For immigration:
