Season-ending dinners to honour the hometown team were fast becoming a tradition. This one, at Ottawa’s Russell House Hotel, was to take on historic significance as the event where an aide to Lord Stanley of Preston announced the Governor General’s intention to donate a championship trophy.

The first presentation of the Stanley Cup took place at the annual meeting of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA), whose hockey team had won the championship. Readers of this Montreal Gazette story would have had no idea of the internal dissension wracking the MAAA. Their hockey team refused to accept the trophy because the name inscribed on it was “Montreal A.A.A.,” not the name the team preferred: “The Montreal Hockey Club.”

In 1894, a four-way tie for first place in the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada standings necessitated Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time. Montreal defeated Ottawa in the final showdown to retain the trophy awarded to them the year before for finishing first.

On February 14, 1896, the Winnipeg Victorias defeated the Montreal Victorias, at Victoria Rink, to bring the Manitoba capital its first Stanley Cup. For the Manitoba Free Press, the win itself was evidently more newsworthy than the actual score. Montréal’s La Presse did report the final tally: 2 to 0. Heavy betting was a common practice among sporting types.

Four players in the historic match of January 31, 1901 were eventually named to the Hockey Hall of Fame: Winnipeg’s Dan Bain and Mike Grant, and Fred Scanlan and Harry Trihey of the defeated Montreal Shamrocks.

Maybe it was a change in the town’s name that did the trick. The Thistles of Kenora finally won the Stanley Cup in 1907, after unsuccessful challenges in 1903 and 1905. Back then, the Lake of the Woods, Ontario community was known as Rat Portage.
