Native Residential Schools in Canada:
A Selective Bibliography

Compiled by Amy Fisher and Deborah Lee

April 2002

It is an honour to be asked to write the introduction to the following listing of materials pertaining to Native Residential Schools in Canada available at the National Library of Canada. This bibliography accompanies the exhibition Where are the Children? Healing the Legacy of the Residential Schools produced by the National Archives of Canada, the Aboriginal Healing Foundation and the Aboriginal Healing Charitable Association in collaboration with the National Library of Canada, numerous church and other archives presented at the National Archives of Canada in Ottawa from June 18, 2002 to February 3, 2003.

The type of materials listed in this bibliography include books, scholarly articles, school histories, personal accounts, theses, videos, and Internet resources. Please note that we would also like to acknowledge the incredible amount of coverage on the topic of residential schools by Native newspapers and periodicals, many of which are available at the National Library and some of which are listed herein.

The scope of the bibliography, particularly more recent publications, suggests the vast impact that residential schools have had on the Aboriginal peoples of Canada. Themes of the bibliography range from the injustices of abuses and enforced hardship to reconciliation and restitution. It is our hope that this bibliography enhances the exhibition in a meaningful way.

Ay ay, Meegwech, Thank you, Merci.
