Manitoba Legislative Building Restoration Project
Since the arrival of the first Aboriginal people thousands of years ago, the colourful
story of Manitoba has unfolded down through the generations leaving a rich legacy of
pride, accomplishment and tradition. The physical monuments created by our past
generations as they laid the foundations for the future community of Manitoba are a
cherished reminder of this rich legacy.
The Manitoba Legislative Building is our province's premier symbol of this historical
pageant and the accomplishments of our people. It was built between 1913 and 1920 in the
Neo-classical style of architecture popular at the turn of the century. Sitting atop the
central tower is the internationally recognized statue of the Golden Boy.
To maintain and preserve the building, Manitoba Transportation and Government Services has
started a $7 million project of repair and maintenance on the 80-year-old building. The
project involves repair and stabilization of the external stonework on the tower, as well
as restoration of the Golden Boy including the installation of new lighting.
Throughout the restoration and repairs, expected to take approximately one year, we will
be updating and expanding this site. We invite you to explore this site, its links and
discover the vibrant diversity of Manitoba heritage.
