One Business, One Number
To simplify your dealings with government, Manitoba will be adopting a common business
identifier to replace the multiple numbers you currently use. This number is called the
Business Number (BN).
What is the BN?
- The BN (derived from the GST number) is assigned by Canada Customs and Revenue Agency
(CCRA). The BN identifies a business and associated account(s).
- As Manitoba adopts the BN, it will identify your business and account(s).
- For example, Company A below has a BN. The same BN will identify its business and
account(s) to the Companies Office and the Taxation Division in Manitoba.

Why is Manitoba adopting the BN?
- The adoption of the BN will support the concept of "one business, one number".
- The use of the BN has been recommended by business to simplify dealings with government
and is used by other provinces.
Future benefits of adopting the BN
- The BN will allow business self-service using the Internet.
- The BN will reduce duplicate information requests from government.
