The Participants: Autobiography, Biography and Memoirs
In all of the historical literature about the rebellions in Upper and Lower Canada, more has been written about the leader of the rebellion in Upper Canada, William Lyon Mackenzie, than any other individual connected with these events; this is reflected in this section.
The Dictionary of Canadian Biography, an essential guide to Canadian historical biography to 1920, is especially strong on individuals connected with the rebellions in both Upper and Lower Canada. Individual biographies also serve as guides to both published and unpublished source materials. Collectively, the biographies of those individuals prominent in the events of 1837-1838 provide an excellent introduction to the history of the rebellions. A selection of individuals from Upper and Lower Canada, including military figures, rebels and patriots are listed below.
