HBCA Reference Inquiries
Those who are unable to do research in person at the Archives Research Room may wish to send a reference inquiry. Microfilm copies of Hudson's Bay Company Archives (HBCA) records are held by the Library and Archives of Canada (Ottawa). (These are being added to as filming continues at HBCA.) The National Archives (Kew, England) holds microfilm copies of HBCA records to about1904.
Archives staff will:
- consult reference tools such as biographical sheets, post histories, ship histories, indexes and search file notes
- conduct limited searches of special media holdings including: photographs, documentary art, cartographic records, architectural drawings and moving images and sound recordings
- provide guidance on microfilm reels to be borrowed
- conduct limited general research and provide referrals to professional researchers when more detailed research is required
When sending an inquiry, please:
- submit your full name, complete postal address and telephone number, so that we can contact you (if necessary) or if we need to mail documentation that is not available online
- provide approximate dates and locations of HBC employment for research about HBC employees
- for Special Media requests, provide as much specific detail as possible regarding dates, location and topic
