Doing More for
Special Needs Veterans

We want to be sure that the NVC is “getting it right” for special needs Veterans and their families. So a Special Needs Advisory Group is reviewing VAC’s programs and services as they relate to Veterans who may face greater challenges re-establishing into civilian life. A special need is an injury that results in severe levels of disability affecting both the Veteran and their family members.

The advisory group is made up of:

  • five CF Veterans with special needs;
  • three health professionals;
  • one senior ranking military official; and
  • one advisor on family needs.

Over the past several months, a number of special needs Veterans and their families met face-to-face with the advisory group to offer input on the NVC. As well, 10 focus groups were held in Victoria, Edmonton, Ottawa, Quebec City, and Halifax providing even more feedback. A report issued in February outlined how well the department’s programs are meeting special needs, how they could be improved, and where there are potential gaps. The group will continue to work with VAC as we consider and respond to the recommendations.
