Glenn Gould's Funeral

at heart, creation
is compassionate,
compassion creative,

the one a fuse of love
to all it surveys, a
maker remaking the
earth, the other

a flame of merciful awe
through every wretched
madness of this world:

beside the coffin of
Glenn Gould, his aunt
describes how the pianist,
companion in music to Bach,

in unspoken hymn to animals,
had founded in his dream
a farm where cows bound
for slaughter might live

out their lives in peace,
hermit though one with
the earth, like the pianist
lying here, with pasture

for piano beyond the cruel
cacophony of men who
cannot make love their art.

James Strecker, Recipes for Flesh, (Hamilton: Mini Mocho Press, 1989)
